Our School

Orion Alternative School is housed in a historic building in the family-friendly Mount Carmel neighborhood of Redwood City. We are the home to two unique and innovative programs, the Orion Parent Cooperative Model and Mandarin Immersion Program. We also incorporate a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) integrated focus in our classrooms and “outside education” through our very own school garden. We also offer art lessons with the support of parents through Art in Action.

We believe families in both the Mandarin Immersion and Parent Cooperative Programs are our strongest partners.
 
Families play an active and vital role in the education of their children, monitor academic performance, work with teachers to emphasize the importance of education, share the unique gifts of their home languages and cultures and model a commitment to learning.  Because the values and vision for our school  programs are developed with families, parents strongly support our school. Our school's parent leaders participate in the life of the school by attending and planning programs, volunteering services, and assisting in the process designed to enhance the aspects of the school.

The Orion Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is comprised of parents from both programs. All parents are members of the PTO.
